The Impetus

Baltimore Spirits Company was founded with the raison d’etre of bringing Maryland Rye production back to it’s cultural home. We have grown to produce many spirits, all of which are dear to us, but Rye remains our North Star. All of our whiskey is mashed, fermented, distilled, and aged in house. It always has been and it always will be. We are a true pot still operation, like the first whiskey distilleries in America.

Our family life always revolved around the dinner table. It was there that a great appreciation of simple Sicilian cuisine became rooted in them. Their house was always open to many friends and family. On Sundays and Holidays, Nonna Rosa, would cook up a feast. They all just sat together, enjoyed each other and talked and laughed while they were “feeding their faces.” Our matriarch Giovanna, who hales from Cefalu Sicily, married Albert Blattermann, a neighborhood “boy” and because they wanted to instill an ethnic cultural life style in their children, they stayed and raised them in Little Italy. Until 2016, our family was the only family with 4 generations still living in Little Italy. It was the desire to share our Sicilian heritage and Sicilian cuisine that prompted the family to buy an older neighborhood diner. Giovanna along with her daughter Gia Fracassetti created a new, warm, comfortable Italian restaurant in Baltimore’s Little Italy. At Cafe Gia, we strived very hard to recreate a Sicilian bistro, a place where one feels like they are in Sicily while dining. Our walls and tables are embraced with hand painted colorful murals while the exterior echoes an old Sicilian bistro. We have created a little bit of Italy with fresh, delicious Italian food and friendly service. My daughter and partner Gia Fracassetti and son in law, Executive Chef Gianfranco Fracassetti, and I welcome you to our ristorante to experience a true trip to Italia via Piccola Italia. Sol Oaxaca is a passion project brought to life by two close friends, Reynaldo Villatoro and Tom Doxanas. Reynaldo’s years of experience in the restaurant industry, coupled with his love for Mexican cuisine, has been a driving force behind the creation of Sol Oaxaca. He has worked his way up from dishwashing to managing a successful restaurant franchise and has long had a dream of opening his own restaurant.

On the other hand, Tom has a family history in the industry, with his uncle and grandfather having founded and run the renowned Bel Loc Diner. With their shared vision and the support of their friends and family, Reynaldo and Tom came together to bring Sol Oaxaca to life.

It’s been host to many establishments over the years — starting with Byrne’s in the 1940s and changing many times to The Cellblock, Empty Pockets, SkyBox Bar and Grill, The Sly Fox Pub… and it’s been our home since 2012.
